Volcanic basins are sedimentary basins with a significant amount of primary deposited volcanic rocks.
The volcanic processes influence the petroleum prospectivity of sedimentary basins in several ways.
- Maturation: increased hydrocarbon maturation due to heating.
- Migration: enhanced hydrothermal circulation and generation of migration pathways due to magma emplacement.
- Traps: lifting and deformation of the overburden possibly forming traps.
Large Igneous Provinces (LIPs) and volcanic basins.
LIPs are the surface manifestation of mantle melting proceses commonly associated with thermal plumes.
LIPs are divided into Continental Flood Basalts, Volcanic Rifted Margins, and Oceanic Plateaus and Ridges.
Volcanic basins are are found along many of the worlds prospective rifted margins, in particular in the around NE and S Atlantic ocean (gray ellipses on the map).
